Facebook has acquired Finnish mobile data startup Pryte for an undisclosed sum.
Pryte offers a cloud-based service enables operators to sell mobile data in bite-sized packages. This means that users can buy data access for a particular app on the fly, rather than requiring them to buy in bulk at the beginning or end of the month.
Facebook has pursued similar initiatives in the past – last year, it partnered with a variety of operators across the globe to give users free or discounted data access specifically for its services – and, with global domination currently at the top of its list, the acquisition seems to make a lot of sense.
A spokesperson for Facebook told Mobile Marketing: “The Pryte team will be an exciting addition to Facebook. Their deep industry experience working with mobile operators aligns closely with the initiatives we pursue with Internet.org, to partner with operators to bring affordable internet access to the next 5bn people, in a profitable way.”
