Facebook Acquires Video Filter App Masquerade

Masquerade

Facebook has acquired video filter app Masquerade for an undisclosed sum.

Masquerade – stylised as MSQRD – lets users overlay their video feed with masks, animations and effects that move in real time with their face and send the results to their friends.

The purchase is reminiscent of Snapchats own acquisition of a filter app, Looksery, which led to it rolling out its first paid feature last September.

Masquerades technology will be integrated into Facebook, but the app will continue to run as a standalone product, at least in the short term.

“Within Facebook, we’re going to be able to reach people at a scale like never before. For starters, we’ll be able to bring our technology to Facebook’s audience of nearly 1.6 billion people,” said Masquerade CEO Eugene Nevgen. “This is a scale of audience we never imagined was possible.”
