Facebook is expanding its Craigslist-like Marketplace to 17 countries across Europe, enabling more local sellers to connect with buyers in their communities.
The social network introduced its eBay competitor in October 2016 in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, and has since added Canada, Mexico, and Chile. Now, the Marketplace will be arriving in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
“Whether you’re a new parent looking for baby clothes or a collector looking for a rare find, you can feel good about buying and selling on Marketplace because it’s easy to view the public profiles of buyers and sellers, your mutual friends, and how long they’ve been on Facebook,” said Deborah Liu, VP of Marketplace at Facebook. “Throughout our initial rollout we have focused on making it easy for people to connect, browse and discover products.”
According to Facebook, more than 18m new items were posted for sale in the US Marketplace in May. Despite the positive figures, it hasn’t always been good times for Facebook’s Marketplace. The Marketplace got off to a very negative start with guns, drugs, live animals, and other illegal items appearing within the first week of its launch.
