Facebook could be working on smart glasses that use a similar technology to Microsoft’s HoloLens and Magic Leap’s ‘will we ever actually see it?’ mixed reality headset.

According to a patent filed for a “waveguide display with two-dimensional scanner”, by three members of Facebook’s VR subsidiary Oculus, the glasses will use waveguide technology to project images into the real world for the user.

“A waveguide display used as part of a virtual reality (VR) system, augmented reality (AR) system, mixed reality (MR) system, or some combination thereof,” reads the filing. “In some embodiments, the waveguide display may be included in an eye-wear comprising a frame and a display assembly that presents media to a user’s eyes.”

The move into the creation of VR/AR/MR smart glasses was teased by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year at Facebook’s F8 developer conference. At the time, he went as far as saying “people standing around looking at blank walls” would be “a thing of the future” – and the making of these glasses look set to get people on track to do just that.
