Facebook introduces GoFundMe-esque fundraising feature

Facebook is introducing a new feature that will enables users to collect charitable donations from their friends for emergencies or other causes. Think GoFundMe but with buddies.

The Personal Fundraisers feature will enable Facebook users to leverage their friend networks to build up a pot relating to their cause. It is launching in the US, to those aged 18 years and older, in beta over the next few weeks.

In addition, Facebook is introducing Donate Buttons to all verified pages – after previously only been available to nonprofits through live broadcasts and posts. The expansion of the buttons will enable public figures, brands, businesses and organisations ‘new ways to fundraise on Facebook for the nonprofits they support’. Viewers will be able to donate as they watch, or once the broadcast has ended and is posted on the page.

“When people mobilise around the causes they care about, it builds a safe and supportive community. Our charitable giving tools have made it easy for people to raise millions of dollars for nonprofits to support those in need directly on Facebook,” said Naomi Gleit, VP for social good at Facebook, in a post.

“We’re constantly inspired by all the good done by people on Facebook and are committed to building tools that help build a supportive and safe global community.”
