Facebook is pushing more local stories in the news feed

FacebookFacebook has continued its major overhaul of the news feed by making changes to where the news comes from that is prioritised on the social network.

Starting in the US, Facebook will now push news from local publishers higher up the news feed in its hopes of eliminating fake news from its platform and ensuring higher quality content on its platform. Facebook says it has plans to expand this to more countries later this year.

“People consistently tell us they want to see more local news on Facebook,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on the social network. “Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives. Research suggests that reading local news is directly correlated with civic engagement. People who know whats happening around them are more likely to get involved and help make a difference.”

Facebook also provides a ‘see first’ feature, which enables users to decide which news sources they want to appear at the top of their feeds. In addition, the social network has begun testing a section dedicated to connecting people to news and information from their community called ‘today in’. This is being tested in six US cities currently with plans to roll it out to more cities in the coming months.
