Facebook has introduced support for physical security keys in a bid to make user accounts more secure.
Facebook users will now be able to register a physical security key to their account, if they wish to have increased security that text message login or generated code approvals may not cover. It says the keys will provide phishing protection, interoperability with other online accounts, and fast login.
“We are taking that account protection a step further with Security Key,” said Brad Hill, security engineer at Facebook, in a Facebook note. “Most people get their security code for login approvals from a text message (SMS) or by using the Facebook app to generate the code directly on their phone. These options work pretty well for most people and in most circumstances, but SMS isnt always reliable and having a phone back-up available may not work well for everyone.”
Users who wish to add a U2F (Universal Second Factor) compatible security key will need the latest version of Chrome or Opera. For the time being, Facebook says it does not support security key logins for its mobile Facebook app. However, with an NFC-capable Android device, with the latest version of Chrome and Google Authenticator installed, users can use an NFC-capable key to log in from Facebook’s mobile website.
