India might be the second biggest market for Facebook, but its struggling to make money from its 132m users in the country.
According to Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah, Facebook makes approximately $15m (£9.6m) per quarter from its Indian operations, equivalent to $0.15 per user. By comparison, for each of its 193m in the US – its single biggest market – Facebook earns between $7-8.
According to Shahs estimates, Googles quarterly revenues in India stand at $350m – over 20 times as much as Facebook, possibly due to being better-established in the country.
Its certainly not for lack of effort. Last year, Facebook launched an ad format specifically designed for Indian users, which responded to local user behaviour by letting people leave missed calls for advertisers. The first summit for its Internet.org initiative was held in New Delhi, and in February the organisation teamed with Reliance Communications to bring free online services, including Facebook, to users in six Indian states.
