Facebook has relaunched its iOS app, which it claims runs twice as fast as the previous HTML5 version.
The app, which Facebook developers have rebuilt from scratch, has been written natively for iOS – replacing the previous HTML5 version that was developed for iOS, Android and the mobile web.
The relaunch is, presumably, part of Facebooks ongoing attempt to sharpen its mobile offering and advertising strategy, following the dramatic fall in share prices since its IPO.
“Building on native iOS gives us a major opportunity to keep making the app faster, more reliable and feature-rich,” says Facebook developer Jonathan Dann. “Whether you have 30 seconds or an entire train ride to use Facebook, we want you to have a fast and satisfying experience. We truly believe mobile is the best platform for Facebook, and the new Facebook for iOS is just one of our steps to ensure you have best Facebook experience anytime, anywhere.”
And it looks like an overhaul of the Android app might be next, as Business Insider reports that Facebook employees are being ordered to switch iPhones for Android handsets – apparently as a reminder from management that the Android app is currently subpar.
