Facebook is shuttering Paper, the stylish iOS news reader app it launched in 2014.
The app has been removed from the App Store, and will stop functioning entirely from 29 July.
Paper was one of the few survivors after Creative Labs, the experimental developmental initiative that created it, was closed down last December. However, its closure is hardly a shock: it failed to take off in the same way as other Facebook apps, never made it beyond iOS, and hasnt been updated since March 2015.
“Our goal with Paper was to explore new immersive, interactive design elements for reading and interacting with content on Facebook, and we learned how important these elements are in giving people an engaging experience,” reads Facebooks statement on the closure.
The most obvious successor is Instant Articles, Facebooks in-app news service, which borrowed its image-led approach to news stories almost directly from Paper.
Don’t forget to enter the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards. The Early Bird deadline for submissions is 22 July. More details here.
