Facebook sues New Zealand firm for selling fake Instagram engagement

Facebook shadowsFacebook has filed lawsuit against a company in New Zealand over the alleged sale of fake likes, views, and followers to Instagram users. The suit, which was filed in US federal court, is aimed at Social Media Series Limited and the three people in charge of the company.

It’s alleged that the company and its directors used different companies and websites to sell fake engagement services to Instagram users. Facebook says it has previously suspended accounts associated with the defendants and given them warnings, but they continued to sell likes, views, and followers.

The lawsuit asks the court to prevent the defendants from engaging in and profiting from the sale of fake likes, views, and followers on Instagram, as well as stopping them from violating Facebook’s terms and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and other California laws.

“By filing the lawsuit, we are sending a message that this kind of fraudulent activity is not tolerated on our services, and we will act to protect the integrity of our platform,” said Jessica Romero, director of platform enforcement and litigation at Facebook, in a blog post. “Inauthentic activity has no place on our platform. That’s why we devote significant resources to detecting and stopping this behaviour, including blocking the creation and use of fake accounts, and using machine learning technology to proactively find and remove inauthentic activity from Instagram.”
