Facebook has started trialling a live event stream feature, using last weekends Lollapalooza music festival as its first test case.
Its part of Place Tips, which Facebook introduced at the start of the year, but events turn the hyper-local nature of the feature on its head. Instead of only having access to content from their current location – detected via Bluetooth beacons – users will be able to vicariously experience events anywhere in the world.
The content combines public content provided by the event itself – in the case of Lollapalooza, this included stage photos and updates from performers – with any related posts from the users friends.
Real-time updates from events are becoming increasingly important to social networks. Twitter in particular has heavily invested in this space recently, with its acquisition of livestreaming app Periscope, the forthcoming Project Lightning – and on the marketing side, its new event targeting product.
