Facebook UK Mobile Users up by 22 Per Cent

Facebook increased its number of UK active monthly mobile users by 22 per cent in June, compared to a year ago, as the social network looks to drive up advertising investment in its mobile channel. Facebook did not break out the total number of UK mobile user numbers but it is now thought to be around the 22m mark in the UK.

In its home market of the US, Facebook’s monthly active users in June upped 18 per cent  in the year. Overall, 751m people are using Facebook on mobile, the social network said, up 54 per cent on the previous year. Approximately 82 per cent of its monthly active users are outside of the US and Canada.

Facebook is looking to evolve its business model so as to take advantage of the growing number of people who access the internet via smartphones, as opposed to desktop computers. According to its financial results for the first three months of the year, mobile advertising now accounts for 30 per cent of overall ad revenue. Facebook is now looking to grow this figure.

Facebook has released the figures today (Thursday) to show that users are actively accessing Facebook via mobile in the summer months, when on holiday or travelling. It listed the top 10 beaches in the UK, where users were checking into Facebook via their mobiles, with Bournemouth proving the most popular.

Facebook executives are now undertaking a summer marketing drive to encourage more advertising investment in its mobile offering.
