Facebook is going to introduce a tool to enable its users to see if they interacted with any Russia-linked accounts before or after the 2016 US presidential election.
The portal will be enable users to see if they have liked or followed any Facebook Pages or Instagram accounts linked to the Internet Research Agency, Russia’s propaganda machine, between January 2015 and August 2017 in particular. It will become available within Facebook’s Help Centre ‘by the end of the year’.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to protect our platforms and the people who use them from bad actors who try to undermine our democracy,” said Facebook.
Last month, Facebook revealed that around 80,000 posts about the US election on its platforms came from Russia between June 2015 and May 2017. These posts reached as many as 126m Americans, nearly half the US voting population.
As a result, Facebook said that it would put changes in place ahead of the next year’s US congressional and state elections. These changes began to take form when Facebook revealed that users would soon be able to see all the ads that a Page is running on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
“It is important that people understand how foreign actors tried to sow division and mistrust using Facebook before and after the 2016 US election,” said Facebook. “That’s why as we have discovered information, we have continually come forward to share it publicly and have provided it to congressional investigators.”
