Fairphone Reaches 5,000 Pre-sales

Just three weeks after the Dutch social enterprise made its handset available to the public, Fairphone has passed 5,000 pre-orders and can now go into production.

The €325 (£278) Android device contains minerals from conflict-free mines and aims to improve the working conditions in the factories it uses. Here, we covered the launch, the phone’s specs and looked into the issues around mobile phone manufacture.

We spoke to Tessa Wernink, director of communications at Fairphone, about the company’s mission, the choice to crowdfund the project and the process towards a 100 per cent ethical product.
