US movie portal and online ticketing service Fandango has launched a mobile ticketing system in association with one of the countrys largest cinema groups.
Moviegoers to Regal Entertainment Groups cinemas can now use a paperless ticketing system that has their tickets sent to their phones as 2D barcodes. This allows the visitor to the cinema to bypass the box office and head straight to the screen, where the ticker-taker will scan the barcode for admission.
Fandango says its Mobile Ticket works with all mobile carriers, and does not require a smartphone or additional convenience fee. The system is rolling out to more than 1,000 screens in the Regal Entertainment Group circuit, says the company.
“Rick Butler, EVP and general manager of Fandango, says: “[Mobile ticket] promises to be one of our most popular conveniences at Regals theaters. Regal Entertainment Group has been an innovative partner since Fandangos very beginnings in 2000, as the company regularly looks for new ways to enhance the moviegoing experience for its customers.”
Fandango says that it has seen a 73 per cent increase in film tickets purchased on mobile phones in 2011. The company already offers the Mobile Ticket service for Reading Cinemas and Hollywood Theaters, and says that the addition of Regals screens takes the total number of cinemas using the scheme to 1,200.
