Fandango Reports 60 Per Cent Increase in Mobile Ticket Sales

US cinema ticket-seller Fandango has reported the best Thanksgiving holiday sales in the company’s 11-year history. The company says the new record is due in part to a 60 per cent year-over-year increase in Thanksgiving holiday weekend ticket sales on mobile devices.

“We believe that 2011 will end up as the year of mobile movie ticketing,” says Fandango executive vice president and general manager, Rick Butler. “The strength of our mobile sales – including a spike in tickets sold on the new iPhone 4S and Kindle Fire – propelled us to set this new Thanksgiving weekend record. It’s clear that Fandango’s apps are resonating with a significant segment of the moviegoing audience that prefers to shop on mobile devices and Tablets during the holiday season.”

Movies including The Muppets, Hugo, Arthur Christmas and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 helped spur mobile ticket sales, which accounted for more than 23 per cent of total sales on Thanksgiving Day, marking Fandango’s second best daily mobile percentage of all time. (The top daily record is 24 per cent of tickets sold on mobile devices during the Fast Five opening on 1 May, 2011.)

In celebration of its success on mobile devices, the company is thanking moviegoers with an ‘Anywhere Everywhere’ sweepstakes contest. Starting today, fans can answer daily movie trivia questions for a chance to win some of the most popular gadgets that offer access to Fandango’s showtimes & ticketing apps, including Amazon’s Kindle Fire, Apple’s iPad 2, and a Samsung SmartTV.
