Online cinema ticket retailer Fandango has rolled out scan-free mobile ticketing to five US cinema chains, representing over 3,500 screens across the United States as it expands its digital efforts in the wake of several key acquisitions.
The company, which saw a record-breaking 2015 as it grew its ticketing business 81 per cent, has continued to see growth by embracing mobile technology, with Q1 2016 ticket sales up 63 per cent year-on-year.
The brand has recently completed its acquisition of online movie-going destinations Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes from Warner Bros Entertainment, adding 20m monthly users to its ecosystem and reaching over 100m app downloads across its various properties.
With 70 per cent of Fandango and Flixter customers using their mobile devices to discover movies and make ticket purchases, the company has accelerated its mobile efforts to make ticketing via smartphones easier and more seamless.
The new system enables customers to simply show theater staff an unduplicatable ticket image on their mobile phones, eliminating the need for QR code or barcode scanners, and making for faster queues at peak times. The system is being introduced in 5 theatre chains, including Carmike Cinemas, Paragon Theaters and the famous TCL Chinese Theatres in Los Angeles.
"Fandango is experiencing tremendous ticketing momentum with a healthy increase in sales, expansion onto Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes and the introduction of new mobile technology to enhance moviegoers' experiences at their favourite theatres," said Paul Yanover, president of Fandango.
The company has also acquired a premium on-demand video service, M-Go, which it is rebranding at FandangoNOW. Through this new acquisition, it will create 'super tickets' that combine movie and home entertainment experiences, enabling customers to catch up on previous installments of franchises or pre-order digital downloads of films they've just seen in the cinema.
