First ScotRail has become the first UK train operator to offer its customers the option of buying rail tickets by SMS. From today, customers buying selected Bargain Berth tickets online for the Caledonian Sleeper overnight service between Scotland and London can opt to have the ticket details and confirmation sent by text message to their mobile phone. Passengers then simply turn up for their train, show the text message to train staff and hop on board. A confirmation email is sent as a back-up. Customers can book up to 12 weeks in advance, and, subject to availability, right up until midday on the day of travel.
The system has been developed for First ScotRail by Derby-based software company ICE Alliance. Peter Williams, First ScotRail commercial director, believes the new service offers maximum convenience for passengers. He says:
Most people have a mobile. This service means they can book their berth on the Caledonian Sleeper online and have the confirmation sent to their phone. No paperwork, no cost and no fuss.
ICE Alliance MD Brian Gibbons adds:
“Weve tested the service on many different computer platforms and its worked perfectly every time. People can have confidence in booking their tickets in this way.
