Fon and Deutsche Telekom are building Germany’s largest wi-fi network, which will launch this summer.
WLAN TO GO will use the leftover capacity of opted-in Deutsche Telecom home broadband users together with the operators’ 12,000 existing hotspots to provide increased coverage across the country. For those who opt to share their connection, a secure private network is created for use inside the home, which is always prioritised, beside a public one for use by other members of the network. These Deutsche Telekom subscribers will be able to access the entire worldwide Fon network for free while other people can purchase temporary passes.
“This innovative partnership perfectly supports Deutsche Telekom’s network expansion strategy,” said Rene Obermann, CEO, Deutsche Telekom. “The increasing volume of data used by people requires the development of existing high-speed networks, and also the creation of more modern networks. More and more, people are willing to share their resources – life is for sharing. By 2016, we want to provide nationwide WLAN TO GO at more than 2.5m additional hotspots.”
