EE will trial 5G mobile technology at this year’s Glastonbury Festival as part of its sixth year as technology partners, making the event in Pilton, Somerset the UK’s first 5G-connected festival.

The UK’s biggest mobile network provider will add five temporary masts to the permanent site already present at Worthy Farm, broadcasting 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G for the first time. 5G will be introduced via 5G-powered wi-fi.

“Smartphones have become a festival must-have as we’ve seen each year with more and more data being consumed at Glastonbury Festival,” said Pete Jeavons, marketing and communications director at BT and EE. “As the long-standing technology partner to this iconic event, we are committed to building a network powerful enough to cope with this huge demand. With the introduction of 5G this year, we are able to trial this new technology at Worthy Farm and make history as the UK’s first 5G-connected festival.”

As previously, festival-goers will be able to keep their smartphones charged up throughout the event in the EE Recharge Tent. Alternatively, a Juice Tube Power Bar is available for £20, offering one full charge for those that don’t want to miss any of the music.

The official Glastonbury app, developed in partnership with EE, has also made a return for the 2019 edition of the festival. The app enables music fans to plan their time at the festival and find their way around the site.
