Google and Apple Own 92 Per Cent of US Smartphone Market

Smartphones now reach 60.8 per cent of the US population – 145m people – with Android and iOS still dominating the market from June to August, according to ComScore.
But, even before the launch of the latest iPhone, Google’s operating system was losing some ground, with an increase in Samsung handset sales of 1.3 per cent unable to make up losses seen for HTC, LG and Motorola. While Apple’s OS and handset share grew 1.5 per cent to 40.7 per cent, Android dropped overall by 0.8 per cent. But Googles OS does still have a 51.6 per cent share of the OS market, with Apple and Google owning a combined 92 per cent market share. BlackBerry is still hanging on to third place, with a drop of 0.8 per cent to 4 per cent share, followed by Microsoft on 3.2 per cent after a 0.2 per cent increase.
Although Google has suffered somewhat in terms of its OS share in the last three months, its products ensure it ranks as the top mobile media property. While Facebook was the top individual app, with 75.5 per cent reach in the US, Google Search, Play, Youtube and Maps rounded out the top five.
