Google is making its first serious Augmented Reality play with the development of Project Glass. It’s a pair of glasses which functions as a heads-up display of all the stuff you typically see on your mobile phone.
The Google developers working on the project, Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun revealed details in a post shared on Google+. In the post, they talk about technology that: “helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment” and invite feedback from readers about their ideas.
The post also includes a video, which is shot from the perspective of someone wearing the glasses, going about their daily business. The video shows a variety of information being overlaid on the display, including weather, messaging, travel alerts, maps, in-store and street-to-street navigation. It also shows the user employing the glasses for social media sharing, video calling, taking photos, and checking-in.
It all looks very cool and very Google, though ex-Google employee Russell Buckley has offered a more pragmatic response to the news that Google is working on Project Glass. He tweeted a link to the video this morning, accompanied by the comment: “When will the first person die by being distracted and e.g. run over.”
