Google Keyboard has become available as an app on the Google Play store.
Offering the default Android keyboard as a standalone app might seem like a strange move, but its presumably aimed at users of the versions of the OS offered by various manufacturers, which often come with their own custom keyboards.
Google Keyboard features Swype-style gesture typing, enabling the user to enter words by swiping their finger across the keyboard, as well as predictive typing, automatic error correction, and voice recognition.
In its announcement, Google also took the opportunity to point out that this wouldnt be an option on iOS: “Android is an open platform, so you can customize your device to your liking; choosing your own keyboard is just one example of what’s possible – and there are a lot of great keyboards to choose from on Google Play.”
The app is available for devices running Android 4.0 and up.
