Google is rolling out an update to Google Maps to provide Android users with real-time information about nearby restaurants, traffic updates and the next bus or train – all at the bottom of the user’s home screen, accessed by swiping up.
A ‘places’ tab will introduce the user to curated lists of places to eat and drink, in the area around the user or a location of choice, under headings such as ‘best dinners’, ‘cheap eats’ and ‘business dining’. Here, the user can also search for everyday places like supermarkets, pharmacies and petrol stations.
Under a ‘driving’ tab, users with home and work addresses saved, can see real-time ETAs to home and work, along with traffic conditions and expected delays.
The ‘transit’ tab will provide recommendations for which bus or train to take – to make it home, work or elsewhere – and show the user when the next one’s coming and an ETA of when they should arrive at their destination.
Marcus Lowe, product manager at Google Maps, said in a blog post: “When youre on the go, theres no time for apps that cant keep up. Whether you need to get to work or you’re just looking for a quick bite around you, Google Maps gives you personalised information about your world so you can make decisions and get around with confidence.”
