Global app downloads from the Google Play store now exceed those from the iOS App Store by over 45 per cent, according to a report from App Annie.

This has been driven by the prominence of Android in emerging markets which have recently seen a major increase in smartphone adoption – the report picks out Mexico, Turkey, Russia and Brazil as major contributors to the Play Stores dominance.

However, iOS still holds a comfortable lead when it comes to money, with the App Store generating 85 per cent more revenue than Google Play – though this gap narrowed in Q1, thanks to marked increases in US and UK revenue on Android.

For iOS, the key market was China, where App Store revenue grew around 70 per cent on the last quarter.
