Consumer spending on games on Google Play surpassed the money spent on those bought for handheld gaming devices for the first time in Q2.
Games represent more than 40 per cent of downloads across Google Play and iOS, along with generating upwards of 70 per cent of revenues in each store. But, despite Android represnting more than double the number of users, iOS revenues still far outway Googles app store.
Nearly 75 per cent of Android games spending comes from the Asia-Pacific region – particularly South Korea and Japan – with three of the top five grossing games created for South Korea’s KakaoTalk messaging firm.
The numbers come from App Annie and IDCs Portable Gaming Spotlight report for Q2 2013.
