Its an interesting time for anyone watching the smart watch market. Samsungs Galaxy Gear watch is set to be unveiled this week, Apple is heavily rumoured to be working on the iWatch, and now Google has confirmed that it acquired specialist WIMM Labs to boost its own efforts.
WIMM released a smart watch which paired with Android devices, the WIMM One, in Novembr 2011. Alongside the device, it launched a developer program and app store for third-party developers apps which provided basic functionality without relying on the paired phone.
Last year, the company shut down operations due to a “an exclusive, confidential relationship” with a mystery partner, which GigaOM has now identified as Google.
WIMMs employees are now part of the Android team, fuelling rumours that a Google smart watch is on its way – and soon.
