Google has overhauled its Messages app for users around the world, completing its rollout of Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging and beginning to test end-to-end encryption in one-to-one conversations.

Every Android user with the Messages app now has access to RCS messaging through either their carrier or directly from Google. RCS messaging, which Google has been gradually rolling out since the middle of last year, is the next generation of SMS messaging, delivering a more interactive experience featuring high-resolution images, videos, audio, the ability to chat over wi-fi, and more.

Along with the completion of that rollout, Google is looking at brining end-to-end encryption to the RCS conversations it has made possible for everybody. With end-to-end encryption, the only people who are able to see the contents of a conversation are the two people talking to each other through the Messages app. Google is rolling out end-to-end encryption to beta testers initially, ahead of a wider rollout into next year.
