Online payment platform Google Checkout is being retired on 20 November 2013, as Google consolidates its payment platforms to focus on the mobile-centric Google Wallet platform.
At I/O last week, Google introduced two new APIs for the Wallet platform: Instant Buy, which is intended to streamline the checkout process for merchants selling physical goods and services through Android, and Wallet Objects, which adds offers and loyalty functionality.
“A key focus of Google Wallet is to simplify commerce for merchants and shoppers,” said Google Wallet product manager Mark Thomas. “For over a year now, consumers on Google Play have been using Wallet to make their purchases, to the benefit of the entire ecosystem. Helping merchants benefit from the growing consumer adoption of mobile commerce is where we believe we can make the most impact.”
The transition should be fairly seamless for Android app developers. Its trickier for merchants using Google Checkout to sell physical goods or services, who lack their own payment processing, so Google is offering these parties discounted migration options, through partnerships with Braintree, Shopify and Freshbooks.
