Google has unveiled the second edition of its Pixel smartphone, as well as a host of other hardware products from across the spectrum.

The Pixel 2 comes in two sizes: a five-inch model with a cinematic OLED display and a six-inch Pixel 2 XL with pOLED 18:9 display. The smaller version is available in ‘just black’, ‘clearly white’, and ‘kinda blue’, while the larger option comes in ‘just black’, and ‘black & white’.

Both devices are powered by Android 8.0 Oreo and have an always-on display. They feature a 12.2-megapixel, f/1.8 aperture rear camera and eight-megapixel front camera, as well as 4GB of RAM and a choice of either 64GB or 128GB in storage. There’s an ‘active edge’ which enables users to launch certain apps by squeezing their phone, while the devices allow fast charging and are water and dust resistant.

The Pixel 2 is available to pre-order at $649 for the 64GB model, increasing to $749 for 128GB, in the US. It is also available in the Australia, Canada, Germany, India, and the UK – where prices start at £629 for 64GB and £729 for 128GB. It will start shipping 17 October.

The Pixel 2 XL is available to pre-order, but won’t start shipping until December. It starts at $849 for the 64GB model, and $949 for the 128GB model. It’s available to the same countries as the Pixel 2, priced at £799 for 64GB and £899 in the UK, but will also be brought to Italy, Singapore, and Spain later this year.

Welcome Home
The tech giant also introduced the Google Home Mini – a smaller version of its Google Home smart speaker and its answer to Amazon’s Echo Dot – and, in the complete opposite direction, the Google Home Max.

The Google Home Mini works much the same as the original Google Home but costs $49 and is available in coral, fog, or charcoal. It’s available to pre-order before its 19 October release, and will arrive in the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Australia, and Japan, along with the US.

The Google Home Max, on the other hand, is aimed at those who want their smart speaker deliver audio more in line with a traditional speaker. It features dual 4.5-inch high-excursion woofers and Google’s AI-powered Smart Sound – which is said to adapt to the environment to deliver the best possible audio experience. It also supports Bluetooth and has an aux port. The Max comes in a choice of two colours – chalk and charcoal – and costs $399. It’s set for a December arrival.

And the rest…
Google also showed off its newest laptop: a two-in-one laptop/tablet Chromebook called the Pixelbook. It features a 12.3-inch display, runs Google’s Chrome operating system, supports the $99 Pixelbook Pen, and costs $999. It’s also available to pre-order in the UK and Canada.

The Pixel Buds are Google’s answer to Apple AirPods – they are wireless headphones that work with Google Assistant, but can also handle real-time translation in 40 languages. The headphones, set for a November release, come in ‘just black’, ‘clearly white’ and ‘kinda blue’ and will cost cost $160.

Then there’s Google Clips, a wireless camera that connects to a device and uses AI and machine learning to decide on the best moments to take a picture. It also edits and curates them. The camera can be placed or clipped anywhere, comes with a 130-degree field of view, and has 16GB of storage. It’s ‘coming soon’ and will cost $249.

Finally, there’s the Daydream View, Google’s VR headset, got a slight update. It maintains the majority of the original features, but now comes with better image clarity and a wider field of view. The headset also features a different soft fabric, and comes in three colours: fog, charcoal, and coral. It will be available later this year at selected stores in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Australia, India, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, and Korea. It costs $99.
