Googles music apps reportedly have over 15m subscribers

YouTube MusicGoogle’s paid music services have reportedly passed the 15m subscriber mark, placing the company a long way behind Spotify and Apple Music. The numbers are a combination of paying users on both YouTube Music and Google Play Music with promotional trials included, according to Bloomberg, citing two sources.

If the figures are correct, it leaves Google well short of the more than 100m paying users reported by Spotify at the end of last month, as well as being off the pace compared to Apple Music’s over 50m subscribers.

On the other hand, Google has more than double the number of subscribers that SiriusXM-owned Pandora has, with the service sitting at just below 7m subscribers. However, it’s important to note that Pandora is only available in the US, whereas Google’s services are available in several countries around the world.

YouTube hasn’t confirmed the number of people it has subscribing to its paid music service, but told Bloomberg that YouTube Music and Premium grew 60 per cent between March 2018 and March 2019. YouTube Premium gives subscribers access to the music service alongside access to regular YouTube without any ads.
