Googles reservation-booking Duplex AI arrives for some Pixel owners

OK GoogleGoogle has expanded the number of users that have access to its much-hyped, and criticised, AI that can place reservations for people.

The company has confirmed to VentureBeat that Duplex has been expanded from a small set of trusted test users to a “small group” of Pixel phone owners in “select cities”. Google didn’t clarify where these select cities were, but it is likely that the cities include its previously announced test cities of Atlanta, New York City, Phoenix, and San Francisco.

At the moment, the Duplex AI’s abilities are not quite at the levels demonstrated by Google earlier this year at its I/O developers conference. So, it can’t yet make those important hair appointments for users.

“We’re currently ramping up the ability to book restaurant reservations through the Google Assistant over the phone using Duplex technology,” the Google spokesperson told VentureBeat. “To help deliver a good experience to Pixel users and to businesses, we’re starting with a slow rollout… and will expand to more Pixel users as we continue to ramp up.”
