Grohe launches connected water security system for the home

Sanitary fittings maker Grohe has launched a wireless-enabled water security system comprised of Grohe Sense water sensors, a Grohe Sense Guard control unit, and the Grohe Ondus app that acts as the homeowner’s interface with the system.

The system is designed to help homeowners avoid water damage incidents. According to a 2017 study from The Consumer View, 54 per cent of households have suffered at least one water damage incident. Another study from Ace Private Risk estimates that 93 per cent of these incidents could have been prevented by appropriate protection systems. And the German Insurance Association puts the average water damage repair cost at €2,297.

The Grohe system consists of wireless-enabled sensors that are installed in the basement, in the laundry room, the bathroom, kitchen, or anywhere where mains water pipes could be prone to a leak.

Grohe Sense is a smart water sensor that is placed on the floor and can detect water retention. If, for example, the bottom of the sensor comes in contact with water due to a leak, Grohe Sense will send out a warning alert to the Grohe Ondus app. Alerts are sent to the user and specific emergency contacts. The sensor also measures the room temperature and humidity and informs users in case of deviations from the standard amounts.

Installed by a professional installer directly to the main water pipe of a home, the smart Grohe Sense Guard control unit uses multiple sensors to monitor water pressure, system temperature, flow of water and general water consumption. It also conducts periodic micro leakage tests so that leaks can be detected immediately before major damage can occur. And in the event of a burst pipe, it automatically turns off the water supply when it exceeds a specific maximum.
