Groupon has launched Breadcrumb POS, a free iPad app that its pitching as an alternative to cash registers for merchants. The app can be used to take card payments, and has a further range of functionality, including logging cash transactions, managing menu items, and printing or emailing receipts.

Breadcrumb POS expands the companys Breadcrumb family of products – which are currently only available in the US – alongside Breadcrumb Pro, aimed at restaurants and bar, and Breadcrumb Payments, which makes up a key part of this apps offering.

To promote adoption, its offering free processing on the first $5,000 in credit card transactions, and is promising a low price guarantee on rates beyond that, of 1.8 per cent plus $0.15 per transaction.

“With this launch we can help every local business replace their outdated cash registers with a modern, affordable, money-saving tool that allows them to save on credit card transaction fees and run their businesses better,” said Mihir Shah, VP Merchant OS. “The successful adoption of Breadcrumb Pro by restaurants and bars has been very encouraging, with some of the finest venues in the country using it to run their businesses. As a result, we decided to launch Breadcrumb POS and bring the power and simplicity of this product to more merchants.”

The launch is actually a rebranding of an app Groupon originally released a couple of days ago as Groupon POS, bringing it in line with the existing products. Strangely, though, its iOS and Android apps are currently still named Groupon Merchants.
