Hargreaves Lansdown Founder Backs Plan for Stadium Wi-fi

Stadium-Live1Steve Lansdown, founder of financial services firm Hargreaves Lansdown and owner of Bristol City FC, has increased his backing of sports media company Sports Revolution and their plan for stadium wi-fi.

Lansdown acquired a minority stake in Sports Revolution in December 2012, and his additional investment through his company Sustainable Technology Investments will give the company the ability to further build on the business potential of high-density wi-fi in UK football stadia.

“This is a great vote of confidence in our business and, in particular, in our vision for stadium wi-fi,” said Antony Marcou, managing director at Sports Revolution. “The technology has huge potential for rights holders, sponsors and advertisers. Fan engagement, social media and mobile marketing in fully connected stadia holds great promise in the UK and we have shown we have the right product and model to take it to the next level.”

As part of the funding, Lansdowns business partner Gordon Power has become chairman at Sports Revolution, taking over from Chris Ingram, who remains a major investor in the business.

“As Sports Revolution becomes increasingly involved in stadia media infrastructure, it is well-positioned to maximise exciting opportunities, especially in stadium wi-fi and social media,” said Power. “I look forward to working closely with Antony and the management team.”

Sports Revolution has recently installed its StadiumLIVE system at Celtic FCs 60,832-seat ground, Celtic Park. Combined with a dedicated fan app called CelticLIVE developed by Sports Revolution, it is the first fully functioning high-capacity wi-fi system to run at a British football stadium. Sports Revolution has also installed fan engagement technology at Twickenham Stadium for the Rugby Football Union, and consulted on digital media projects at Wembley Stadium.
