HMV Launches Image and Sound Shopping App

HMV has launched an iOS and Android app for people to browse and purchase MP3s as part of its reinvention as a multimedia retailer.

The app enables users to search and shop by scanning CD covers, ads and poster images, as well as using audio recognition to buy tracks they hear while on the go. In an attempt to collar retail showroomers, HMV has installed wifi in all of its shops so people can image or audio scan tracks to buy while they are in store.

Users can pre-order tracks on mobile, a function currently limited to iTunes users. HMV is also the first company on iOS other than iTunes to enable MP3 purchases from a native app. Downloads are added to the users digital locker and can be integrated straight into iTunes or Windows Media library.

This is the first digital move made by the company since it was bought by Hilco Capital in April, saving 130 stores and 2,500 jobs.

HMV.com will launch next week.
