Instagram is extending the maximum length for videos from 15 seconds to 60, and enabling users to create single videos from multiple clips.
These changes follow a 40 per cent increase in time spent watching videos on Instagram over the past six months.
Longer videos have been available to advertisers since February, but will now be available to all users – great news to any brands reaching Instagram users through organic accounts and posts. This change is rolling out immediately, and will reach all users in the coming months.
The multi-clip video feature, which enables users to post videos made up of multiple recordings from their camera roll, was actually previously removed from Instagrams iOS app, meaning users had to download third-party apps like Vidstitch or Video Merger. It will be reintroduced with the iOS v7.19 update due this week. Notably, theres no mention of Android in the companys announcements.
Together, these changes will no doubt broaden the type of video content available through the service. Videos that would have previously been impossible to squeeze into 15 seconds – like the make-up tutorials so popular on YouTube – will now be an option, as will more complex videos composed of multiple shots or content sources.
