Instagram has announced it has reached 300m monthly active users, surpassing Twitter, and marking a growth of 50 per cent in the past nine months alone.
According to the Facebook-owned photo sharing website, its users share more than 70m photos and videos a day.
Along with the news of its milestone, Instagram has announced that it is adding verified accounts for celebrities, athletes and brands, ensuring users can easily identify authentic accounts, and that it will be deactivating an increasing number of "fake and spammy accounts" in order to improve users' experiences.
"Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community that shares more than 70m photos and videos each day," said Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram. "We're thrilled to watch this community thrive and witness the amazing connections people make over shared passions and journeys."
