Instagram launches standalone app Threads

Today, Instagram announced Threads, a new standalone app specifically designed for private and quick conversations between you and your Instagram close friends list. Threads is camera-first, and will allow users to share photos, videos, messages, and Stories with only the close friends previously selected.

“Last year, we introduced Close Friends, for sharing more personal moments with a select group of people you choose. Now, you can use Threads to message those people on your Instagram close friends list and you’ll have a dedicated inbox and notifications just for them. If you don’t have a list set up yet, you can make one directly from Threads when you download the app,” wrote Robby Stein, director of product, Instagram.

When Threads is opened, the camera will pop-up first, and users can set shortcuts to send photos and videos to their close friends in a few taps. A new feature on Threads will also let users set their suggested status, turn on Auto Status, or create their own. Examples include letting friends know you’re studying, on the move, at the beach, or at the gym.

“Threads offers a new, dedicated home for your favorite conversations. Messages from your close friends list will appear in both Threads and Direct, so you have full control over how and with whom you want to interact,” finished Stein.

The new app is being rolled out globally starting today.
