Instagram has updated its mobile website to include some of the core features from its app, enabling users to post photos and access a condensed version of the Explore tab without having to download the app.
Prior to this latest update, users were only able to browse, search, like, follow, and see notifications on the mobile website. However, despite the changes to the mobile website, the desktop version still remains the same.
“Instagram.com (accessed from mobile) is a web experience optimized for mobile phones,” the company told TechCrunch, which first reported the news. “It’s designed to help people have a fuller experience on Instagram no matter what device or network they are on.”
As seen by Instagram’s statement, the move is aimed at reaching a wider audience and adding to the 700m monthly users it already has. People in developing countries may not have the network coverage required to download the app and, at the same time, may have to use data they cannot afford to access the app. The introduction of a mobile web version reduces the difficulties faced for these people using the photo-sharing service.
