Facebook’s decision to clone Snapchat’s features across its platforms is continuing to pay off, as both Instagram Stories and WhatsApp Status now boast more than 300m daily active users (DAUs) – almost double Snapchat’s entire daily user base.
The latest figures were reported by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during an earning’s call following the release of the company’s impressive Q3 results.
“Its important to remember that Facebook is about bringing people closer together and enabling meaningful social interaction,” said Zuckerberg, in relation to video being the driving force behind the growth in Stories and Status. “Its not primarily about consuming content passively. Research shows that interacting with friends and family on social media tends to be more meaningful and can be good for our well-being, and thats time well spent. But when we just passively consume content, that may be less true.”
Instagram Stories hit 250m DAUs in June this year, while WhatsApp Status hit the same number a month later. In the short space of time since, both have added 50m users each day. On the other hand, Snapchat last reported having 173m DAUs.
