Instagram Stories hit 200m daily users, overtaking Snapchat, but its not done copying

Instagram StoriesInstagram’s Stories feature has over 200m daily active users (DAUs), according to the company. That total would mean that Instagram’s Snapchat clone is now more popular than the original – which announced 161m DAUs at its last count at its IPO.

In addition to revealing its number of DAUs, Instagram has also added new features to Stories. The app will now enable users to turn their selfies into stickers, as well as introducing geostickers, sticker shortcuts and a ‘hands-free’ mode.

The new selfie stickers means that when users take a photo or video and tap the smiley face, they’ll see a sticker with a camera icon – which enables them to capture a ‘mini-selfie’. To this mini-selfie, users can apply different frames, place it anywhere, adjust the size, and use as many creative tools as they wish. The selfie stickers can also be pinned to a specific spot in a video.

Geostickers will start rolling out to people in Chicago, London, Madrid and Tokyo ‘over the coming days’. The stickers have all been designed by local community members of the respective cities.

Sticker shortcuts will enable users to swipe right, after tapping the smiley face, to see their recently used stickers.

Instagram’s latest updates come just after it updated its Direct messages feature to allow texts and reshares to appear in the same thread as disappearing photos and videos.
