iPhone Trumps Android in MocoSpace survey

US mobile social network MocoSpace has released its Mobile Social Graph, the first in a series of quarterly reports highlighting how consumer behaviours are shifting from the web to the mobile phone. The report includes data on how user habits differ on various device types, including PCs, traditional feature phones, plus Android and iPhone handsets.

With over 11 million members, MocoSpace is the 4th largest mobile website in the US according to research firm Ground Truth. The company says it has become the site of choice for a young, multicultural generation increasingly using their mobile phones to meet people, stay connected, and have fun through activities including chat, instant messaging (IM), blogging, sharing photos, posting videos, listening to music and playing games.

Key findings of the MocoSpace Mobile Social Graph include:

  • Android phone traffic increased 39.9 per cent in Q1
  • 30 per cent of traditional feature phone users plan to purchase a smartphone in 2010
  • iPhone is two times more attractive than Android for potential smartphone buyers
  • Traditional feature phone usage decreased by 22 per cent
  • iPhone/Android sessions are 27.8 per cent longer than feature phone sessions
  • Mobile users log in almost twice as often as PC users
  • iPhone/Android users are 72 per cent more likely to buy virtual currency than feature phone users

“Our Mobile Social Graph report demonstrates the rise of Android and iPhone as central social-networking devices,” says MocoSpace CEO, Justin Siegel. “Our data confirms that smartphones encourage longer sessions and also increased purchasing of virtual currency.”
