Israeli startup StoreDot has revealed a smartphone battery technology which can be fully charged in under 30 seconds at the Microsoft Think Next Conference in Tel Aviv.
The technology is currently a prototype, but StoreDot believes it will be able to integrate its battery into smartphones within a year, and to make it a commercially viable product in three years.
The battery utilises nanodots, a bio-organic crystal only 2 nanometres (0.000002 mm) in size, which also have applications in displays, flash memory storage and image sensors, as well as medicine.
Battery life is currently one of the biggest barriers to smartphone usage, and is set to be even more of an issue with wearable technology. While this technology wouldnt make these batteries last longer, this could certainly be offset by the dramatically shorter charge time.
