Itch.io now requires creators to disclose if their projects incorporate generative AI.
In a recent announcement, Itch.io introduced a new feature called “generative AI disclosure,” prompting developers to specify which elements of their work—such as graphics, sound, text, dialogue, or code—utilise generative AI.
Projects using AI will carry an “AI Generated” tag, with additional tags detailing specific AI applications, such as “AI Generated Graphics” or “AI Generated Sounds.” Games without AI elements will be marked with a “No AI” label.
The platform stated that the new system is designed to “ensure buyers are aware of the origins of the material they are obtaining.”
Developers will have a grace period to update their project pages with the relevant tags. Following this, user reports will help identify creators who fail to comply. To streamline the process, Itch.io has introduced a bulk tagging tool for tagging assets efficiently.
Itch.io also emphasised that projects using generative AI but lacking proper tag “will no longer be eligible for indexing on our browse pages.”
