Jumptap Finds US North vs South OS Device Divide

Ad network Jumptap has published a report that analyses US regions in terms of mobile OS use. According to the report, the South and Southwest tend towards Android, while those in the Midwest and Northeast tend towards iOS.

Texas, California, and Florida over-index for Android, while New England and the Midwest over-index for iOS use, says the report, with New York over-indexing on BlackBerry use.

The company says that the data establishes an “evolving narrative of a North versus South divide in the ongoing battle of the two top mobile operating systems”.

The results are part of Jumptaps monthly data report, the Mobile STAT (Simple Targeting & Audience Trends).

The results also found that Android is still the leader in term of share, with iOS close behind.

“Our advertisers are requesting the most granular data available on mobile users so they can create the most targeted campaigns,” says Paran Johar, chief marketing officer at Jumptap. “This new data reveals some interesting patterns for advertisers to consider when targeting consumers using Android devices vs. iOS devices.”

The new data breaks down ad performance in terms of manufacturer and carrier, and found that Sony Ericsson devices are the only Android phones that come close to the ad performance of iOS devices. Ads running on Sony Ericsson devices in the first half of 2011 averaged a 0.54 per cent CTR, making it the only Android manufacturer above the industry average of 0.52 per cent, but still not as high as iOS devices at 0.78 per cent.
