Juniper Research has released its report, Mobile Ticketing Applications & Markets: Transport, Sport & Entertainment 2009-2014.
The report forecasts that nearly 15 billion tickets will be delivered to subscribers mobile devices worldwide by 2014, compared to just over 2 billion this year. It also reveals that services are developing fastest in the transport sector, with SMS, barcode and, increasingly, app-driven services being offered by rail and metro companies and airlines.
But the potential of mobile ticketing does not stop there. Major cinema chains, concert organisers and sports teams are latching on to the commercial viability, which is driven by both cost savings and the up-sell revenue potential not to mention user convenience. There are also new entrants from a variety of angles, such as apps start-ups and mobile commerce providers seeking to grasp the opportunities they can see.
The report also finds that Western Europe will be the leading region in 2014, based on number of mobile tickets delivered, taking over from current leader, Far East & China region but adds that a number of challenges must be overcome. These relate to business models, and coordinating ticketing schemes across multiple operators.
The report looks at the current and future market for mobile ticketing applications and solutions, providing detailed revenue, user and frequency of purchase forecasts, broken down into three major sectors, as well as two sub-segments for Transport (Rail, Metro & Bus; and Airline Ticketing).
For each sector the number of mobile tickets delivered is forecast, along with the number of users, the usage frequency, the value of purchase, total transactions and the resulting gross transaction values. The report also includes a chapter dedicated to buying a ticket on a mobile phone using NFC, the mobile Internet, SMS or an application.
The report also investigates a number of business models exploring how revenues are distributed across the value chain, and discussing how mobile operators can maximise their opportunity in this market. A number of key drivers are analysed, including cost-saving and the reduced impact on the environment. The report also considers a number of challenges to the development of the market, including the lack of NFC-enabled handsets.
