OTT messaging service KakaoTalk has passed 100m registered users, three years and three months after it was first launched.
The Korea-based app has seen adoption accelerating recently (see graph), jumping from 90m to 100m in just two months.
By comparison, WhatsApp reached 250m active users at the end of last month, while Japanese app Line hit 150m back in May. The latter is more closely comparable in terms of its business model which, like Kakao, largely relies on users purchasing animated stickers in-app for revenue.
