Kenya Saw $16.2bn of Mobile Transactions in 2012

Kenyan citizens made over $16.2bn (£10.2bn) in mobile cash transfers, according to data from the Central Bank of Kenya. Thats up 20 per cent, of $2.7bn, from the mobile transactions made in 2011.
The amount consistently continued to grow over the course of the year, with each month seeing more money processed than the last. By Q4, 2012, mobile transactions hit $1.6bn per month, up from $1.3bn in January.
The total number of mobile money subscriptions in the country stood at 20.3m, as of November. 
Kenyas dominant mobile money service provider continues to be Vodafone-owned operator Safaricom, with its M-Pesa service.
